Lewis Moussard's article - Symbol and Architecture - was informative indeed. The mechanization and efficiency of recent developments have indeed led to a new value of aesthetic both architecturally and artistically.

But my question concerning his functionalist vs. human value aesthetic debate - is whether or not functionalist architecture may not indirectly contribute to new participatory acts of space. Much public art has begun to collectively celebrate these open spaces and new screens/interfaces/skins of these minimalist buildings. Histories of architecture - such as Baroque architecture - is ornate beyond imagination and incredibly value laden. Meant to engage humans in religious experiences, it also contributed to the society of a spectacle - and thereby engaging people in a scripted fashion. So - the point is again - functionalism could also be seen as contributing to celebrations of these structures.

The most obvious examples of these types of acts is the Graffiti Research Lab whose legendary LED throwies are a MASS PHENOMENA WHA!!! But also have designed massive interactive projects on the sides of buildings etc. Again - obvious example - but here is a vid.
